Having covered the fundamentals of Mendelian Inheritance in a variety of organisms, you likely recognize that humans are no exception to these rules. However, breeding experiences on humans is unethical! Thus, most of what we have learned about inherited human genetics has been based upon the study of genetic disorders. The purpose of this project is to apply what you already know about genetics and deepen your knowledge of genetics principles by answering a specific case study relating to human genetics and then teaching what you've learned to your classmates. As a group, you will produce a set of written answers to the case study questions and a 10-minute lesson plan that uses the case study to teach your specific genetic condition or disorder to your classmates. While you will have class time to work on this project, you will need to find time for this project outside of class as well.
NOTE: This will be your only homework assignment between now and Finals.
Download your group’s case study here and pay attention to the specific guidance provided:
Cystic Fibrosis Case Study and Guidance
Do your best to focus on the ethical questions and research the latest treatments and less so on the writing quality of this case study!
Deafblindness (Usher’s Syndrome) Case Study and Guidance
This case study is based on real people (the author is actually one of the subject’s cousins!).
Skip Sections 5 and 6.
Eye Color Case Study and Guidance
You should be able to answer Section 1 without any outside research. Refer to your notes and what you already know about basic Mendelian Inheritance.
Huntington’s Disease Case Study and Guidance
Make sure to start by answering the Focus Questions. Ask your instructor for help in deciphering neural transmission!
